It has been a wonderful week celebrating Catholic Education at Good Shepherd. Today in our Scholars’ Assembly, we acknowledged many students for their commitment to their studies in Semester One this year. Managing time effectively:
As we progress through the term, exam and assessment due dates are approaching. If students don’t manage their time effectively they will begin to feel stressed and overwhelmed. Some simple tips to ensure students are able to fulfil both study, work and social commitments include:
- Creating a weekly planner, clearly setting out all of the week’s commitments (also including some time for rest!)
- Using the Assessment Calendar to keep track of due dates
- Prioritising! If there is an upcoming due date, students should start the project early. All assessment is planned weeks in advance, so time should be prioritised accordingly.
- Multi-tasking is key. With multiple subjects, and assessment for each, students will achieve more if they are working on more than one task at a time. Creating a study planner can assist with the division of time spent on these tasks.
- Asking for help! Parents, teachers and friends are all great support systems through these busy times.
- Factoring in some time to relax. This is important for a healthy life balance.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s school work please contact their classroom teacher. If you need to discuss the matter further please contact the Curriculum Leader for the subject of concern.

School Photos
School photos were distributed in Homerooms last week. If students were absent last Monday (17/7), they can collect photos from the College Office. If there are any issues with your order, or you would like to purchase additional photos please contact Academy Photography directly on 1800 816 224 and they will be able to assist you.
All family photos are at the College Office ready for collection.
ID Cards
If students were absent for school photos in Term 1 and did not receive an ID card their card should be in the College Office (we used Term 2 school photos to have them printed).
If there are students new to the College, or who missed both photo days and they don’t have an ID card at the office please let me know via email so I can make arrangements to have a photo taken and card printed.

SchoolTV:
This week I would like to share two different articles from the ‘Raising boys’ & ‘Raising girls’ topics on our SchoolTV site. Please see the links below and explore the following two articles:
- Can We Raise Boys and Girls the Same Way? One Dad's Honest Answer
- Raising Girls: Self Esteem and the Curse of Perfectionism
PB4L:
This week's PBL focus is to come prepared to school and the classroom. As we are in the full swing of teaching and learning in our classrooms we want to ensure that students are in class and ready to learn as soon as our bell rings. Please take some time this week to discuss amongst your family what preparation looks like this week. Do we have the right uniform for PE classes this week? Is my laptop charged and ready for learning? Are my books in my bag ready to take back to school after completing homework for the night?

GSCC Celebrates Book Week 2023
Preparations are underway to get ready for Book Week 2023 which will be held next week in Week 4 from 31 July to 4 August at the GSCC library. This year’s theme is from Book Week 2023 theme of the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) which is “Read, Grow, Inspire” https://cbca.org.au/cbca-book-week .
It is the library’s special role to promote the importance of reading and the Book Week activities aim to promote reading in a variety of ways. The ability of students to read digital or print resources needs to be developed, encouraged, and celebrated because reading skills are important for our students not just academically but also socially and emotionally.
Our Book week activities include craft days (Monday and Tuesday), Book Character Dress Up Day (Wednesday) and a competition in the categories of painting their dream library, making a Book Bento (to respond to what they have read), and designing a book cover. Dress Up Day participants can win one of these titles: “Most Authentic Costume”, “Most Inspired by a Book Character Costume” and “Best Homemade Book Character Costume”. Prizes for contests and draws include $10.00 tuck shop and book vouchers.

Inter School Athletics
A big thank you to all students, staff and parents for your participation in the 2023 Inter School Athletics Carnival! A special thank you to Spinifex State College and Mount Isa Athletics for holding the event. It was a great day for our athletes with a number of outstanding performances. In particular, our junior students had a great turn out and placed in most of their events, winning the Junior division for GSCC. Our senior students had some great moments throughout the carnival, however, Spinifex won the Senior and Overall championship. A big congratulations to the following students for their achievements
- 12 yrs Runner Up Age Champion - Addy Grey
- 12 yrs Age Champion - Mitchell Kiona
- 13 yrs Age Champion - A-Tai Li-Downie
- 14 yrs Age Champion - Aaliyah Poihipi
- 15 yrs Age Champion - Alli Thomson
- Open yrs Age Champion - Jamaron Mothe
Inter School Rugby League
Good Shepherd's Inter School Rugby League teams have been steadily preparing for their first round against Spinifex. Unfortunately, due to some absences and injuries from both sides, last week’s game was cancelled. School’s are hoping for better health as we look at Thursday 3rd August as our series opener. We encourage all students to continue to come to training and to let staff know as soon as possible if they cannot attend.
