Welcome to Week 6! We have less than three weeks remaining of the 2022 school year, and I encourage students to work hard and make choices for the remainder of our time together this year.
Student Wellbeing
With holidays just around the corner, students are starting to enter into another busy ‘assessment’ time of term. The student wellbeing hub website linked below has some excellent resources for parents who are helping their children to navigate through what can sometimes be difficult teenage years.
2023 Planning
This week, I emailed families with an enrolment intention form. If your family is not returning to Good Shepherd next year, could you please complete the form by this Friday, 11 November so that we can provide you with the departing student paperwork. If you did not receive my email, please let me know.
Remembrance Day
This Friday our Year 11 Legal Studies class will represent the College at a wreath-laying ceremony for Remembrance Day. A minute’s silence will be observed at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month to remember all the soldiers who have died fighting to protect the nation. Students at school will also pause to offer up a prayer for the fallen soldiers and for peace in all nations.
Awards Night
We are looking forward to celebrating student success at our annual Awards Night next Monday, 14 November. Families must obtain a ticket to attend this event, the details for this process was emailed by Trent Wilkinson earlier this term.
Commendable Achievement Assembly
Next Wednesday, 16 November we will acknowledge the many students at the College who always try their best at school. They are awarded to students in each year level who are nominated by their teachers for being dedicated to their studies and always completing their work to the best of their ability. Students and Parents will be notified by email if they are receiving an award.
Farewell Year 12 Students
Next week is a very important week for our Year 12 students and their families. We wish our students well at their Graduation Mass on Wednesday evening and Graduation Dinner on Saturday. These are emotional events for students, staff and families as we farwell them from the College. Although this is the end of their formal schooling, they will always remain part of the Good Shepherd family. Mr Roberts has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure these events are memorable for students and families, and we are looking forward to these as we culminate 13 years of schooling.
A Prayer for our Graduates
Dear God,
With their classes and exams now complete, may they strive toward excellence in all they do.
With the applause quieted, may they celebrate and lift up those around them.
With the speeches concluded, may their voices rise up to pronounce peace and justice in the world.
With the celebrations coming to an end, may they find bliss in future endeavors and adventures.
With achievements in hand, may their achievements grow and enrich their communities.
Through Catholic Education, may they discover Holiness in the midst of life's blessings as well life's challenges.
As their careers commence, may they conduct their life's work with exceptional skill and integrity inspired to Go Forth and Set the World of Fire from this day onward.
Amen.

Developing effective study skills
Effective students are those who have clear goals, practised study routines and good organisational skills.
Becoming an effective student is no different from becoming good at anything else - it takes practice, skill, feedback and focus.
Studying is a learned behaviour, and it is very hard to all of a sudden know how to study in Year 11 when the academic pressure is more noticeable.
I highly recommend all students reflect on their study habits and skills. The following list represents a great starting point for improving skills and organisation as a student:
- Develop a study timetable.
- Take notes in class- highlight key concepts and ask clarifying questions. Really engage in the lesson.
- Avoid absence from school.
- Attend Homework Help. Make an appointment with your teacher if necessary.
- Submit drafts - on time, and as complete as possible. Investing time here means your teacher can give you the best possible feedback and minimises the work for the final submission.
- Study regularly and review older work every two weeks.
QCAA’s myQCE has a site, Study Tips, specifically to assist students with improving their study habits. It’s well worth the time investment.

A SPECIAL REPORT: Managing Overwhelm
Due to the pandemic, the world we now live in is a very different place. The hyperconnected nature of our current environment means that we are constantly being reminded of the challenges we face via numerous media and social media channels. Our connectivity to the digital world exposes us to a barrage of messages that can leave us feeling overwhelmed. As a result, many children and their parents are reporting higher levels of stress and anxiety.
Our brains have not evolved fast enough to adapt to this digital landscape. The combination of constant access to information and having little control over the situations presented, can be stressful and overwhelming. It is therefore important for adult carers to check in with their children and be aware of what information they may have been exposed to. It may not necessarily be the information itself that is harmful, but more their inability to process and make sense of it. Providing children with the skills and strategies to cope will enable them to flourish and thrive, socially, emotionally and academically.
The blueprint for parenting, based on our own experiences, is no longer fit for purpose in raising kids as citizens of tomorrow. This can be inherently stressful and overwhelming, not only for parents and carers, but children alike. If left untreated or unmanaged, constant stress and anxiety can lead to a number of behavioural issues or health consequences.
This Special Report suggests a number of strategies to help manage any feelings of overwhelm that you or your child may be experiencing.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

St Vinnies Christmas Appeal
The St Vinnies Christmas Appeal provides hope for Australian families who are struggling to keep up with the increasing pressure of the cost of living. Donations of food, toiletries, Christmasdecorations, children’s gifts and money support local families in need. The College has supported the Vinnies Christmas Appeal for many years which has seen our donations spread far and wide within the local Mount Isa community.
This year, we aim to provide St Vinnies with 1 basket of donated goods per homeroom. See the list of suggested items for collection below. Please bring these items to school and place them in your homeroom basket or alternatively drop them into the front office. Thank you again for all of your support.

Year 11 Retreat
On Saturday the 29th of October we began our Year 11 retreat with an amazing Mass which Fr. Emene presided with the help of Fr. Dave and also we welcomed back Fr. Mick from his time in Brisbane. This was such a great occasion for our students, Fr. Emene talked about the leadership skills that these Year 11 students will need to be the leaders of our college in 2023. He also spoke to the faith the God has in each of them to carry out this act of leadership. This Mass was an awesome moment to initiate our retreat. We also thank our amazing GSCC pastoral team for catering dinner for our students, their families and the Good Shepherd community.
From Mass we departed Mount Isa for a very long and restless night on a bus to Magnetic Island, although I think the parents were more excited than our Year 11 students for the week ahead..
We arrived in Magnetic Island on Sunday, 30th of October around 10.30am - From here we had a day of settling in and checking out the facilities. The students were asked to think about their goals for this retreat, and what they intended to get out of this experience. The first night included a liturgy that really pushed our students to dig deep and be vulnerable with each other to express their feelings of gratitude for one another and break down the social barriers to allow us to come closer as a group. The prayers and goals that each student expressed made me feel very proud and excited for the leaders that are emerging at Good Shepherd.
Our second and third days were full of activities including a reef tour, abseiling, and stand up paddle boarding - While some of these activities were particularly challenging each student got involved, either by physically participating or being a support to each other while encouraging their peers. The activities were set to have fun, but also push each other and accomplish these challenges as individuals and also supporting each other as well.
On our reef tour we swam with fish, spotted Shelley the local green turtle and learned all about the wild life surrounding Magnetic Island. The reef tour was an eye opener for a lot of our students, and gave many of them a first time experience of snorkelling and marine education through our wonderful tour guides at Aquascene. While abseiling we saw a lot of scared faces and worried souls as the natural cliff face that we abseiled off was not visible at all until you were going backwards down it, however, the majority of us completed this challenge and the ones that did not, were all so supportive and motivating, which is all that we can ask for. Through stand up paddle boarding we saw a lot of unbalanced land animals trying to achieve the feat of standing up and paddling around the ocean. Although we could not all get around so freely (Turns out my height is an absolute liability while on a paddle board), it was awesome to watch each other have fun together and enjoy the ocean.
On our second night of retreat Fr. Emene led our liturgy/reflection where we talked about how we could shine as individuals but also embrace and care for others through humility. This led to 2 hours of amazing student led conversations and moments shared to mend relationships or show our appreciation for one another among other things, this way easily my favourite moment of the whole retreat.
On the third and final night of our retreat our liturgy/reflection was focused towards ‘going forth and shining’ as a human, as a leader, and as a member of our community. We gave the students an opportunity to reflect on who they believe are leaders and who are the people that mean the most to them. The level of reflection and interaction by this stage of the retreat was very deep and engaging, it was a very great way to cap off our retreat and really showed the social and spiritual growth of our young men and women.
This retreat was an overall great experience for myself as the pastoral leader, to be able to lead this group through to this point and see the development of each individual has been outstanding. I am excited to see how they continue to grow and push each other to be better each day as individuals and as a cohort. I would like to thank all of our homeroom teachers who took time out of their week to attend this retreat with us, they are your child's first point of call each morning and we are so grateful to have them attend this retreat with us. I would also like to thank Mrs. Morganson for her leadership and support while we were away, she provided great guidance and laughs throughout the retreat. Lastly, I thank Fr. Emene and the Good Shepherd Parish for allowing him time to attend our retreat, his guidance and involvement with our students is always so valued. We are very blessed to be able to have such an amazing group of leaders to help our students grow and develop on their own journey of leadership.
