Next Term, I am looking forward to taking some time off for my long service leave. I am grateful to Mrs Amy Webb who is stepping into the role of Acting Principal in my absence. Mr Trent Wilkinson will be taking on the role of Acting Assistant Principal Administration and Mr Willard Gono will be Acting Mathematics Coordinator.
Graduation
There are less than 10 weeks until our Year 12’s graduate from Good Shepherd Catholic College. It is a time of excitement and nervousness as they approach their final exams, end of year events and their special Graduation Dinner and Liturgy. Students and Parents are reminded that Year 12 students are not allowed to bring partners to the Dinner who have left the College or attend a different school. We made this decision because we want to keep the Graduation a special ‘Good Shepherd’ event. Certainly, students can bring one of these friends to the arrivals, but the Graduation Dinner is for family or current Good Shepherd students only. Please contact either Travis Roberts (Year 12 Pastoral Leader) or myself if you have any questions.
RU OK Day
What a wonderful day we had celebrating RU OK Day yesterday. Our Pastoral Team prepared a special breakfast for the College community and our Hospitality students and Mrs Cole looked after our staff with a special morning tea.

At Good Shepherd Catholic College, we remind our students that we can do check-ins with our friends all year round. Here are some great conversation starters:

Release of Year 12 results - QCE
I’d also like to remind all Year 12 students to register on the QCAA myqce Student Portal to be able to access their results from 9am on Friday 16 December 2022.
From 2020, QCAA no longer prints and posts Senior Education Profiles (SEPs) to all Year 12 students. Students may print their own SEP or they may request a printed copy of their SEP from the QCAA in the Student Portal. Printed copies are free. SEPs printed by the QCAA are no different to those that students can print for themselves. SEPs printed by QCAA are not official documents and are provided for students’ convenience only. They must be authenticated by users by scanning a QR code on the SEP documents.
SEPs are issued as electronic documents stored in students’ learning accounts. These documents are official and can be downloaded as secure PDFs. Students can save their SEP on a computer or mobile device and provide it to third parties electronically or they can print it.
Tertiary Entrance Rank students

Have you put in a QTAC application?
Don’t forget to also register for your ATAR.
What email address have you used for your ATAR account?

Year 12 Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Graduation Liturgy
On Thursday 1st September our Year 12 Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students travelled to Townsville to attend the Indigenous Graduation Recognition Liturgy. This event is to recognise their achievement of completing 12 years of schooling.
In addition, as it is the final year of our Emerging Leaders program, all Year 12 Emerging Leaders attended the Blak Excellence Aspiration luncheon at The Ville just prior to the Graduation Liturgy. Students enjoyed a two course sit down meal, and enjoyed listening to several guest speakers who are the epitome of successful Indigenous people in various chosen fields. This was an excellent afternoon showcasing positive pathways for our students, and what Blak Excellence looks like.

Good News Stories
Blake Munns
Over the weekend, many students were able to participate in the Mount Isa Multicultural Festival. Blake Munns participated in the Sundowners Kalkutungu Dancegroup. The dance group advocates for culture to be at the forefront of the Mount Isa community. Blake was amazing to watch, and showcase her culture through such a meaningful platform. Well done Blake!
Denan Duncan
Students have been currently completing electives for the Emerging Leaders program. The electives are a selection of subjects that students have the opportunity to do, to help delve deeper into learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Denan Duncan has recently written a beautiful poem, inspired by the quote “We Stand on the Shoulders of Giants”. Have a read of Denan’s poem below.
“We stand on the shoulders of giants” It means to love your elders, We respect our lands, Their shoulders are a place of warmth, protection and guidance. |
Emy Hopkins, Lara Iwers- Cummings, T’Keyah Simmons
Last week, some of our Emerging Leader students participated in the High School Musical. It was a fantastic performance, showcasing our talents within our school community. Emy Hopkins took on the role of Taylor Mkessia. Emy showcased many talents including singing, dancing and acting. Lara played the role of a cheerleader and it was awesome to see her confidence on show for our school and community to see. Finally, T’Keyah played a role in the drama club. TK was absolutely fabulous! Great job Emerging Leaders.
Darcy Webber
Every year the Zonta Club hosts an International Women’s Day Dinner in which they celebrate and recognise the work and achievements of local women within our community. Zavier Wuthrich has had the chance to participate in Cadets and fly in a Cessna 172 Plane. He was able to fly alongside a qualified instructor under supervision. Heroes in Sport
This Term, Patrick Wade participated in the JCU Heroes in Sport event in Townsville. In partnership with the North Queensland Cowboys, JCU presented highschool students an exciting opportunity to learn from industry experts and experience the different pathways within Sport. The program includes a unique insight in high performance sport careers including; Biomechanics, Sport & Exercise Science and Physiotherapy. Patrick details his experience below.
To start the day we did an ice breaking activity to help get to know the other 30 students from across northern Queensland. We then went into the Biomechanics branch of Sports and Exercise Science. We were able to discuss with experts in the field about the job and go through an activity that tracked the movement indicators of a person's body through a set of cameras. After that, we went into the Physiotherapy room where we worked with lecturers and other professionals. We engaged in some fun activities, isolating different muscle groups and then went through a PowerPoint about different pathways as a Physiotherapist. We then travelled to the Cowboys Centre of Excellence and were given a tour of the different rooms before going up to the physio room for a presentation. This was more interesting to me as it outlined different study paths for Sports and Exercise Science and what you may be able to do after studying. I learned that while studying, you get to choose a sports team to do your study with including; Cricket Australia, North Queensland Cowboys, and Queensland Rugby League. After the information sessions, we did a warm-up training session with the Cowboys trainers before starting our power tests including; a vertical jump test, a 10-metre sprint, and a 30-second assault bike test. Overall the day was very enjoyable and I gained some helpful information about what I'd possibly like to study at University or what career path I will choose after school.
Townsville Greenhorns
A massive congratulations to Riley Eggmolesse and Ryder Soper who have been invited to join the Greenhorns Academy Program for 2023. This experience has come off the back of some great performances and is a testament to the boys effort and dedication throughout the year. This structured pathway supports the development and transition of promising young Rugby League players as they continue to climb the ranks. Well done boys!

On that note, we are looking forward to celebrating even more of the amazing and talented sports people from Good Shepherd at our annual Sports Awards Night in Term 4 Week 1. I will be sending specific details closer to the event, but please ‘save the date’.

GSCC Netball Finals
This year we had 3 out of 5 of our GSCC Netball teams go into the Semi finals series. These teams were Hoops and Bears in Junior Division 1 and Wolves (QISSN) in Ladies Division 1. Unfortunately, all three teams had losses and Bears and Wolves could not continue on their finals journey, however both teams fought valiantly to the final whistle.
However, Hoops were Minor Premiers and even though they lost they had another bit of the cherry. Hoops coached by Amy Haddon and Teulia Kohlhase picked the girls up and dusted them off to play the preliminary final last Thursday night. This was won by keeping their composure with a very close game which went into extra time.
Then the girls had their next challenge on Saturday afternoon which was their Grand final day. Hoops turned up to play grand final netball with great sportsmanship and grit by all the players in this team. From the first whistle there was nothing going to stop them in this game. Well done to these young ladies and their coaches for all their hard training and commitment throughout the year.
It has been a very busy season this year with sincere thanks to Mrs Sally Holland, Ms Jane Edmiston, Mrs Kate Thinee and Mr Jericho Young for helping continuously throughout the season with uniforms and helping me on a Wednesday night and at trainings on Tuesday afternoons.
We at GSCC are very proud of all our netball teams and their development and success due to our wonderful coaches;
Wolves: Mrs Julie Hutchinson & Miss Phoebe Ryder
Hoops: Amy Haddon & Teulia Kohlhase
Bears: Trinity Ottaviano, Olivia Lee and Rilee Webber
Wildcats: Sophie Greenhalgh
Lions: Abby Benson, Darcy Webber and Charlotte Fahey
My sincere thanks to you all for a wonderful season of growth, laughter and learning.
Thank you, families for your ongoing support of our girls and their sporting journey as you ride the ups and downs, highs and lows of Netball. All these emotions that we want sport to provide for a growth mindset in our young ladies. We are grateful for your fantastic support at the games, on the sideline and from afar.
Lastly, thank you to the girls who wear the GSCC dress with pride and in the way that they step out onto the court each week and endeavour to give 100% to the game they love, Netball. We are very proud of you all.
Thankyou again and congratulations to the entire GSCC Netball Family.

As the final full schooling term of Year 12 finishes, I would like to congratulate the students for their efforts and engagement so far throughout the year. During our Year 12 Retreat and Opening Mass, I spoke about how each student should strive to be someone that their younger self should be proud of in order to leave a legacy of respect, gratitude and pride for this cohort. I believe that in many ways, each student has achieved this throughout the year.
Whether it be performing on the sporting field, on stage at the Musical, volunteering at Jangawala, establishing and organising a Multicultural Day, excelling in TAFE, work experience, academic studies and countless other endeavours, all Year 12s have contributed to a wonderful legacy so far this year.
The finishing line is approaching with external exams and our graduation activities and as such, I encourage each Year 12 student to ensure their effort, engagement and attendance with all that this College offers is exceptional to finish the year.
It has been rewarding to speak with a number of students about their chosen pathways for next year (from doctors to pilots to electricians and boilermakers) and I am very much impressed with their motivation and dedication in this respect. I encourage your child to come and speak with me if they are wanting any information about university, mining, apprenticeships or jobs for next year, as I am only too happy to help in this space.
Graduation Tickets Reminder
A reminder that Graduation Dinner tickets are on sale at the College Office or they can be paid through direct deposit. Each student is allocated 3 tickets for their parents and themselves, with each ticket costing $80.
Please ensure that your child completes the Graduation Information Google Form that I sent to them last week, and also all Companion and Dietary Requirements forms are due to be returned to the College Office or myself before this Friday the 9th of September.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Graduation Dinner, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Important Careers/Pathways Information
A reminder to our Year 12 students completing Work Experience and TAFE next week and during Week 1 of Term 4, that they need to ensure that they remain engaged with any class or assessment work that they are missing throughout their absence. Please encourage your child to speak with their teacher before they leave for these commitments, so that they are exercising their diligence as students.
Additionally, on Wednesday the 12th of October, our Year 12 students will be undergoing some practice/mock job interviews with some community business owners who are volunteering their time to support the students. The aim of the interviews are to help students practise for the real thing by having a face to face interview to improve their confidence and verbal communication skills. Students will need to ensure that they have a completed resume for the interviews with more information to be communicated closer to the date.
Please ask your child to let myself or Mrs. Coghlan know if they do not wish to participate in the interviews as they have already secured work for next year.
