Please complete and submit the paperwork in before Friday Week 10 (this term) to ensure you make the most out of a very short Term 4.
I am in Year 10 and am wondering if I can change senior subject trial subjects?
Of course you can! The process is the same as any subject change. Like the elective subject change, please complete the paperwork in Week 10 this term to ensure you make the most out of a very short Term 4.
I’m in Year 7 - 9 and am thinking about what subjects I will do next year… What is the process for this?
Don’t worry! Subject Selections for 2023 will be sent early in Term 4, so there will be ample time to consider your options.
I am in Year 11 and want to change subjects, what should I do?

Week 7 Focus: Front Office & Tuckshop
R U OK? Day
R U OK? Day is Thursday, 8 September 2022 and it is the national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, ‘are you OK?’ and start a meaningful conversation whenever they spot the signs that someone they care about might be struggling with life.
For our College community, we will be formally recognising R U OK? Day on Tuesday, 6 September with the Pastoral Team hosting BBQ breakfast before school for all staff, students and families at the Mary Street entrance. Additionally, students will be completing activities throughout the week to raise awareness about mental health and how they can overcome their own challenges or support others within our community.
R U OK? Day is also a timely reminder for our College community that every day is a day to ask “are you ok?” when we see someone struggling. We look forward to seeing many families join us for a free bacon & egg burger on Tuesday 6th September at 8am.
In this edition of SchoolTV - UNDERSTANDING ADOLESCENCE
Adolescence is the transitional stage of development that is usually associated with the teenage years. In 2018, the Australian Curriculum Assessment Authority, redefined adolescence as affecting young people aged between 10-24 years. During this time, they experience rapid physical, cognitive and psychosocial growth which affects how teenagers feel, think, make decisions and interact with the world around them.
During adolescence, a child's brain can be considered as being “under-construction”. The rate at which this progresses will vary depending on the individual and also their gender. As a result, some parents may view adolescence as stressful or difficult. However, it does not need to be. Setting boundaries, implementing consistent monitoring and maintaining a strong and loving connection will help families adjust during this time.
It is also an important time to keep the communication lines open through clear and age appropriate conversations. Speak openly about changes that they are experiencing and be conscious of their mental health as many of the conditions people confront in adulthood, can begin to manifest in adolescence.
In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers can learn how to guide and best support their young person as they transition through adolescence.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Shave for a Cure - Cancer Foundation
Calling all interested in raising awareness and funds to support those facing and impacted by cancer!
An estimated 150,000 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer this year alone, and every four minutes, another life is affected by a diagnosis.
Here at Good Shepherd, we commit ourselves to supporting those suffering with and affected by cancer by participating in Daffodil Day - Shave for a Cure. As part of our commitment, we raise funds and awareness, which culminates in a public head shaving or cutting on the last day of term 3. (No.2 for boys and ponytail cut off for the girls). When you shave or cut your hair, you are supporting the 110,000 Aussie families currently facing blood cancer, and the funds raised provide relief to those who need it most.
We are currently looking for volunteers to join in raising funds and being sponsored to cut their hair. If you are interested or have any questions please contact Sophie Greenhalgh (Our spiritual leader via sgreenhalgh2@goodshepherd.catholic.edu.au); Amy Haddon (Our College Captain via ahaddon2@goodshepherd.catholic.edu.au) or Miss Puxty (mpuxty@goodshepherd.catholic.edu.au).
Please reach out ASAP as parental/guardian permission forms are required for you to cut your hair.
RUOK Day Talent Show

Along with week-long activities in homerooms for RUOK day, Good Shepherd will be hosting an RUOK Day Talent Show on the final day of school. The event is focused around raising the spirit of our community, sharing in laughter and smiles. Please check your emails if you’re interested in doing a song, dance or performance, and complete the RUOK Day Talent Show Form.

An Anxious Friend
When I was a kid I was so shy that I wouldn’t go out to the movies with friends or ride around town. I only went out with my parents until I got into my senior years but even then it was only ever with a group of friends.
I used to get anxious and especially so when meeting new people or going somewhere new. Even now when I am going to a new place or meeting new people I get nervous and scared.
Over the years though I have learned that the discomfort of these situations is worth the outcome; whether it be in a new friendship or new experience. It takes practice though to overcome your discomfort and that means putting yourself in uncomfortable situations.
The only way to overcome fear is to face it. It can be a lonely world if you are shy and find it difficult to make friends or talk to people. So how do you do it; practice.
The first thing is that you genuinely have to want to meet new people and be interested in them. You yourself like it when people show a genuine interest in you and can tell when they don’t.
When you talk to people remember ‘who, what, where, when, how and why.’ If you get stuck for something to say ask one of those. The person you are talking to is probably as scared as you so ask them questions about what they like or do.
Most people like talking about things that interest them so ask them questions that allow them to do that.
As I got older I started reading the headlines and first paragraph of stories in the newspaper. That way I had a broad understanding of different topics and if I found someone who knew a lot I would be able to ask them about it and listen to them. Sometimes I didn’t have a clue what they were talking about but at least they were talking to me.
I missed a lot of things growing up because I didn’t have the confidence or courage to do things. Don’t ever think that you are the only person who ever feels anxious about social situations because most people suffer to some degree.
Watch when people go into a room at school, a party or an event. They go straight for the people they know and never take the risk of meeting someone new. That’s a shame because your best friend may be someone you haven’t met yet.
Some of the most interesting conversations I have had with people who I knew nothing about before I started speaking to them. Simply by asking ‘who, what, where, when, how and why’ I not only learned about them but subjects and topics I had no idea about.
The other thing is to start saying hello to people; just hello, because friendships are formed through time and shared experience. You make friends at school or in sporting teams or dance class because you are simply spending time together doing something similar.
When you say ‘hello’ to someone the next time you see them, you are familiar with them and so you say ‘hello, how are you going?’ After that you do the same greeting but ask them a question.
“Hey, I saw you play football the other day, how long have you been playing?”
“Hey I saw you in the musical, you were really good. How did you feel up there?”
Listen to what they say and ask follow up questions. Don’t let fear stop you, because before you start, they are not your friend but they will be thankful that you made an effort and you don’t know where that may lead.
I love finding out about people and what they like and what they think and why. It helps me expand what I know and helps me find people with similar interests. It also helps me connect people so that if I know someone is from a particular place or has a particular interest I can introduce them to someone else who is from the same place or has the same interest.
Everytime I meet someone new I am as scared as you may be, you just have to tell yourself it is worth the pain and discomfort for the pleasure you might find and the friend you might make.

Interschool Sport
Term 3 brought another great Rugby League tri-series as we faced off against Spinifex State College. New to this year's program was our U13’s team, bringing a fresh crop of Juniors to the competition. Our U13’s, U15’s and Open’s teams played hard throughout the series, demonstrating their tough attitudes and willingness to represent the college. Unfortunately, the overall shield was won by Spinifex, winning 5/9 games. Congratulations to Spinifex’s students, staff and coaches on their achievement and we look forward to competing again next year.
Thank you to all staff who helped before, during and after games, parents for supporting and Mount Isa Rugby League for hosting the competition. The coaching staff look forward to continuing our training in the lead up to our Rugby Nines trip in Term 4.
